Hah!! A time comes and comes only once in lifetime that you get to learn from something long forgotten and buried under the heavy sands of time. Only some intelligent among us make use of the oppurtunity and painstakingly try to teach us the values and morals of past but all in vain. We ignore them and slowly they learn that we are not interested in their verbose elucidations. Several movies on Mahatma Gandhi have come and gone but with no effect on the audience or should I say the viewers. All won critical appreciations but none could withstand the wrath of an Indian viewer. Perhaps it takes only a Master of Masters to create such magic as Lage raho Munna Bhai.
When I first saw the trailor of the second edition of Munna Bhai with Circuit standing by his side, I merely expected an open lampoon of Gandhian thoughts and principles but to my surprise the movie promised to be a different one and it surely did. The way it got down to the level of audiences to teach them Gandhian thoughts, or Gandhigiri, was simply marvellous. I thought my first post to this blog would be the review of Sholay, the biggest Bollywood grosser but this movie made me to change my mind and concentrate on its review.
The movie is about a local don Munna(Sanjay Dutt) who falls for a pretty Radio Jockey(Vidya Balan) without even seeing her and is desperate to meet her. His luck shines on the eve of Mahatma's birthday as the Radio channel announces a quiz competition on Mahatama and winner gets to meet RJ and host a show on radio. To accomplish this Munna kidnaps a bunch of professors from a college and you guessed it. He wins! Subsequently to impress the girl Munna learns about Gandhi's life and becomes so obsessed with Gandhi that he actually starts seeing him. He learns new ways of life in non-violence and discipline.
However the most toughest part of his life was yet to come in form of Lucky Singh, a ruthless inhuman builder, who steals the bunglow in which Munna's love interest and her old companions live. Munna decides to fight not with his usual method of violence instead with a new power of non-violence. He starts his mission Lucky Singh by using Radio as the platform for his Stayagraha and asking the listeners to send flowers to Lucky Singh. In the process he learns the problems of Indians and solves them successfully using Gandhigiri. The problem however keeps enveloping our hero, his girl leaves him on the pretext that he lied to her that he was a Professor. Lucky Singh refuses to buzz and proves him insane in a press conference.
Though the things are not same for everyone Lucky Singh's daughter gets entangled in her own problems which was finally solved by- Yes!! our own Munna Bhai. Lucky Singh's melted and everything ends happily. Thanks to the trend of poetic justice in Indian Cinema.

But atlast what the picture proves that Mahatma still lives in us and smiles upon us with a benovelence that boggles us all. We must thank and appreciate Mr. Chopra for reincarnating Mahatma in a manner and style that we understand. He really deserves a standing ovation from all of us. Jai Hind!!! Lage raho Munna Bhais.
